STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville Big Red volleyball team performed well enough to please its coach, but simply was overpowered by a tough East Liverpool squad, with the visitors taking the match 3-0 Thursday night at Steubenville High School.

“We played much better tonight,” Big Red coach Lynn Meyer said. “The first game against them we were shell- shocked, I think, they’re just a fabulous team. We picked up some digs, we had some blocks. In one of the games we only had three errors and we’ve been averaging about 30 errors, so I thought we played really well today.

“I see East Liverpool going really far. They’re a good team no doubt, they’ve beat some really good teams. I’m pleased with the girls. I’m very proud of the effort they put forth, they didn’t quit.”

East Liverpool (12-2) built early leads in each of the first two sets, and hung on, fending off the Big Red (3-9) attempts to rally back into it.

“We lost to Beaver Local in our last game so we had to make some adjustments,” East Liverpool coach Jonathan Stokes said. “We got it together and everyone was hitting their target. When you hit the target, you can execute plays and that’s exactly what we did. I like playing on the road and performing like that, the girls are more relaxed and they’re talking a little more.”

In the first set, the Potters jumped out to a 7-3 lead, then forced a Big Red timeout with a 9-2 run to take control. Steubenville fought back and went on a 5-2 run of its own, but East Liverpool’s advantage proved to be too much to overcome as they took the opener, 25-16.

In the second set, East Liverpool got off to an even better start by racing out to a 9-1 lead. Big Red went on a pair of 4-0 runs, each bringing Steubenville to within four of the Potters, but that ended up being as close as Big Red would get as East Liverpool once again closed out a set win, 25-17, for a 2-0 advantage.

Steubenville got off to its best start of the night in the third set, jumping out to an early 4-2 lead, but once again the Potters performance became too much for Big Red to handle. East Liverpool took the lead with a 7-2 run to make it 9-6 and never looked back. Big Red used its timeout down 16-8 and responded with a 4-2 run to get back within six, but that would be as close as Steubenville would come to extending the match as East Liverpool closed it out on a 7-2 run to take the third set by a 25-14 count and sweep the match.

“They didn’t let down for anything,” Stokes said. “Once they got a lead they kept it going and did what they are supposed to do.”

For Big Red, Jaliyah Hubbard had seven kills. Leah Ferguson had nine assists. Suzie Rososchi had three kills. Sidney Snyder had six kills. Taylor Williams had seven assists. Sammi Cucarese had 10 digs.

“We’re doing good things,” Meyer said. “We just have to get it all together one night and get everyone to have a good night.”

For East Liverpool, Skye Stokes had 14 kills, 14 assists, two digs and five aces. Terran Stacey had four kills, 17 assists, two blocks and an ace. Kiandria Lowery had six kills, four blocks, three digs, and an ace. Emma Ludwig had seven kills, an assist, a block and two aces. Sharnae Wilson had four kills and three blocks.

East Liverpool is back in action at home against Buckeye Local on Saturday.

Steubenville is back at home for its next game, facing off with Barnesville on Tuesday, the first of four matches at home for Big Red next week.
