Letter to the editor:

Don’t limit my rights

I was amazed by the Oct. 12 letter in the Sun headlined “Stop letting NRA call shots,” in which the writer claims that House Speaker Paul Ryan and his colleagues in Congress “lack the backbone to represent the voters who elected them.”

Does the writer not realize that not everyone thinks the way he does? Nevada Sens. Dean Heller and Catherine Cortez Mastro represent me, yet only one votes the way I want them to. I am a pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment NRA life member, and oppose any effort to restrict my rights.

The writer also claims people overwhelmingly agree there is no place for automatic or semiautomatic weapons on our streets. That’s not the case for the majority or people I know.

I think one of the biggest problems we have right nowadays as a society is that people are afraid of differing viewpoints, so they surround themselves with people who think like they do. This has made it impossible to compromise anymore, for everyone who disagrees with you is to be mocked and belittled. One of the writer’s final statements — “There is no debate on this matter” — clearly illustrates this point.

The NRA and gun owners of America have millions of members, giving them the influence they have and making the writer’s statements completely false. The majority of people do not feel the way he does.
