After three rounds of the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club, Ben Griffin and Matti Schmid were outpacing the field, each looking for their first individual win on the PGA Tour.
Griffin recently hoisted his first trophy at the PGA Tour’s team event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but the North Carolina product had yet to close the deal by himself. Schmid’s best career result is a third-place finish at the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Schmid has three top-10 finishes in alternate-field events in 2025.
Rickie Fowler started the final round four shots back of the leaders. It was Fowler’s first Sunday in the final group since his last win at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. While Fowler had the experience advantage on Griffin and Schmid, he made a couple of early mistakes to take himself out of the hunt.
While Sunday set up for a duel between two players looking for their breakthrough win, it became clear early on that the day would belong to Griffin. He made an eagle at the first and followed that with a birdie at the second to stretch his lead to three. The lead grew to five mid-way through the front nine. A couple stumbles by Griffin brought Schmid and Tommy Fleetwood into play, but Griffin ultimately did enough to steady the ship and earn his first individual PGA Tour win.
