SHADY SPRING, W.Va. (WVVA) - Back on May 17th, Martina Taborda Urbaneja took home the girls Class A/AA singles state championship for Shady Spring. Taborda Urbaneja’s victory was the first-ever state title in the Shady Spring tennis program.

For her efforts on that day and the whole month of May, she is the WVVA Athlete of the Month.

However, Taborda Urbaneja is not originally from West Virginia or the United States of America, as she is a foreign exchange student from Argentina, having spent just one year in the USA. Despite never playing tennis in the country, she made her presence known quickly, never losing a match in the regular season or state tournament, taking home the state title in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Hear from Taborda Urbaneja on her travels to the USA, how she was able to dominate on the courts and hoped to inspire other young female athletes in the Two Virginias.
